A full forgiving nose and noticeable hip in the tail which is wide at the fins but pulled in at the tail for precise cornering. A low speedy entry rocker and plenty of rocker in the tail for quick release snappiness. A deep exaggerated single concave transitions into an even deeper double concave through the fins adding lift and bringing the board to life in soft waves. A rolled deck carries thickness through the center line and makes for lower volume knifey but soft forgiving rails. Modernized 80s retro squash tail performance. The latest model in Matt’s “Post Modern Retro” collection, the Rad Ripper draws its inspiration from 80s performance shortboards and is scaled for small, to medium everyday surfing. Super-fast, forgiving, user friendly retro fun, featuring modern updates and improvements suitable for almost anyone. Design highlights include; a fast paddling, early entry easy glide and quick starting low entry rocker. A wide plaining squash tail with lots of lift and surface area for small surf. A noticeably healthy amount of tail rocker, cut through by an aggressive double concave, adding even more lift and squirt under the rear foot. It paddles great, catches waves with ease, trims till the wave hits the beach and it’s a Mayhem so you know it performs! To do all this we stayed true to the Hydra’s magic making design elements and made some performance enhancing adjustments. We reduced the intensity of the sidecut outline that locks in control and shortens radius of turns while gaining speed and maintaining control. We kept the double concave inside a single concave hull that adds speed while allowing proper turns and vertical surfing. We also kept the distinct chines that add release and allow a concave high volume board to roll easily rail to rail. We increased the rocker as the board grew in length so the longer rail line would fit into the curves of smaller waves and feel free. The surf industry was in a 20 year performance design rut when in '94 and '95 Matt Biolos experimented with multiple variations of fish for himself, Chris Ward and Cory Lopez that became the building blocks for a performance hybrid revolution. “I’d never before had so many surfers and shapers ask me what are you riding?” The RNF '96 sh designs that teenaged Chris and Cory took to the North Shore and made their indelible mark on the surfing universe were featured in the seminal '97 surf film 5’5” X 19 ¼. The key component of Matt's fish is that they are performance minded inspired by MR’s competitive minded twins of the '70s and '80s with relatively pulled in tails designed to rip, not just small surf but in all sizes and shape of waves. Most fish have been predominantly influenced by wide tailed '70s kneeboards that create speed but have always fallen far short of the peak performance of modern short boards.
